PI Tubing with Pebax Coating for Sinus Surgery Applications

Recently, we collaborated with a medical device manufacturer to develop a precision tubing specifically designed for sinus dilation systems. This tubing is crafted from high-performance polyimide material and coated with PEBAX (Polyether-block amide). By leveraging the complementary strengths of PEBAX and PI, a synergistic effect is achieved, further enhancing the overall performance and laying the foundation for innovation in high-performance medical device research and development.

The tube features a natural-colored polyimide material with an outer diameter (OD) of 0.024 inches, an inner diameter (ID) of 0.0165 inches, and a length of 1.5 inches. The dimensional tolerances for this tubing are +/- 0.005 inches. The coating consists of 0.00025 inches of 63D PEBAX (Polyether-block amide), which is also natural in color.

Polyimide material is a high-performance thermoset that offers exceptional tensile strength even with extremely thin walls. It is important to note that it is not PA6 material.

Pebax® thermoplastic elastomers are composed of polyamide and polyether backbone blocks. These specialty elastomers boast very low material density, a wide range of Shore hardness values, extremely efficient energy return over a broad temperature range, and optional biobased sourcing.

Pebax (Polyether-block amide) is a plasticizer-free thermoplastic elastomer ideally suited for medical-grade tubing and film due to its ease of processing and diverse properties.
